Never punish a son or daughter again. You will never make more excuses for not having a good educated and disciplined child. Its effectiveness is incredible. The best basic training program ever. Amazing.
But when it works, it is absolute magic. These are not some gimmicks or tactics, but healthy and fulfilling ways of dealing with people.Actually DOING what the book says is not easy, especially with life-long habits in doing it another way. Having a spouse or others also trying is very helpful. My wife & I took the P.E.T. Buy this book and really give the approach a chance. Now we are giving the book to them (and re-reading it ourselves) for our grandchildren. course & read the book when our own children were young. The methods the book teaches are broadly applicable to dealing with people -- in the workplace and social situations as well as with children.
Our son now is a bright, healthy, happy child who is independent, curious about the world around him and is rarely upset or taciturn. I still read this book in order to keep refreshing the principles in my mind. It was a real eye-opener and it helped my husband and I craft our own ground rules about how we were going to raise our son.
It is a not cookie-cutter, one-size-fit-all approach. I'm sure it will continue to be great resource well into my child's teens. The strategies are universal certainly but what it really teaches you is a way to communicate better with your child (even with each other) that is respectful of the differences in all of us.
I was pregnant the first time I read PET. This is the beauty of PET. I can't recommend this highly enough.
Before he even arrived, we had already agreed on how we would handle certain situations and didn't have to wait until we were right in the middle of an issue before discussing it. I believe it's all because we have found a way to cater to his needs that is fair for all of us in the household.
It is a good program but it is not the first "national" ParentEffectiveness Program nor is it as good as the source from where the author took many of his ideas including his book's title. The person who is credited for the first national parent effectiveness programis Rudolph Dreikurs. Both can be purchased at Amazon.comDr. I am familiar with the P.E.T.
His most popular and easy to findprogram that has much more to offer than P.E.T. John A. is "Children: the challenge".One of Dreikurs' students, Don Dinkmeyer, has written a series of "Parent Effectiveness Books" for specific age groups, from early childhood to teen years. As a parenting instructor, I would highly recommend either Rudolph Dreikurs'well written book or Don Dinkmeyer's books.
I have been a Clinical Psychologist for over 40 years. Hisbooks are as relevant today as back then. AbraitisBattle Creek, Michigan 49017
program. He has written many books in the 1950's and 1960's.
I cannot recommend it more highly. It not only helps with children, but with any communication at any age. My husband and I took this full course 30 years ago.and I am just completing teaching it to some young mothers. After adding the Word of God to it's teachings, it becomes the most wonderful communication avenue in the world.
